El Angel - Mexaton - CD
(3R Entertainment) I was put off a bit when I started listening to
this release. It wasn't the rapping I had problems with, it was the
amateur '80s synth sound of the music which gave me pause. Luckily the
rapping, while not great was still good enough to keep me interested. Then
featured rapper Columbo showed his skills and I felt that there
just might be something to this release. My feelings kept going back and
forth like this throughout the whole disc. At times El Angel,
played the part of the typical bad rapper with the way he over enunciated
the lyrics with feigned badass breathiness. The other part of the time he
was right on. And thankfully the music got much better with each
progressive song. The standouts include the title track danceable "Mexaton,"
and the Yello sounding industrial dance tune "X".

Summer Brings Out the Best in Urban Music
by Paul Zimmerman
First Coast News
With temperatures rising, and attitudes flaring during the summer, it only
seems appropriate that a whole host of underground urban music be
unleashed upon the unsuspecting masses. Thanks to the fine folks at Mia
Mind Music, these artists are bubbling up from the underground and
preparing to explode upon the scene.
Here are three such artists that have been building up their reputation in
the underground and are hoping for a break and mainstream success.
From Dallas up to New York via Mexico comes El Angel who’s already sold
1.5 million CD’s South of the Border. His mix of English and Spanish hip
hop has been dubbed Mexaton and comes off as hip hop with a danceable
vibe. In a sense it is hip hop you could actually salsa to. It’s a
different approach and it works to create a party vibe that is relentless.
It’s not bad stuff at all, I have no idea what he’s rhyming about, but his
flow is good and at times you get the sense that he’s having fun doing
this. This isn’t “Rico Suave,” by any stretch of the imagination and if
you don’t believe that check out, “Mexaton,” for proof.
Last but not least, New Yorkers, NSB unleash their debut disc of hip hop
influenced reggaeton, Lo Que Quiere La Gente Algo Diferente. Throughout
their debut disc, NSB take just about every urban influence around them
and smash it together to define their sound. One second the songs on Lo
Que Quiere La Gente Algo Diferente are thug hop and then the next they’re
straight reggaeton. It’s all over the place and reflects the diversity
within the band and the city of New York. While this record also has a bit
of a party vibe to it, it definitely has much more of an edge to it than
El Angel. It’s rough around the edges and isn’t afraid to get ugly if need
be. It’ll give you a black eye and drop you in an alley if you look at it
the wrong way. Don’t provoke it and check out “Na Noche Mas,” for a slice
of NSB’s latin, hip hop, reggaeton, jams.
Whether it’s straight hip hop or beats influenced by latin culture, the
underground urban music scene is thriving with fresh ideas and scrappy
tunes. D-Lou, El Angel, and NSB, are just three examples of the
underground sound bubbling up and ready to break it wide open. They’re
ready…but is the world?
